You learned about the first French explorations to North America though the video we watched. You are learning more through reading the book "Voices from Colonial America: New France."
Read chapter two, "Native Peoples of New France," and respond to these questions. Copy the questions into a word document and respond to them in complete sentences. DO NOT CHANGE ANY FORMATTING AT ALL. When you have answered all the questions, send your responses to me at sylviaf@mpsvt.org.
1. Two major Native American/First Nations groups were living in North America when Champlain arrived. Name the two groups, and compare and contrast them. Include information about their housing and food/agriculture.
2. Champlain supported a certain Native American group in their war against another group. Who did he support and why?
3. Who were the 'coureurs de bois,' and what was their purpose?
4. French, Dutch, and English settlers all had a purpose in North America. Why did they come? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
5. Lakes and rivers are sometimes named after famous or heroic people. Did Champlain deserve to have a lake named after him? Why or why not? Write a good paragraph that states and supports your opinion.
